UMass Medical Center

The Cancer Center at UMass Memorial Health is a leading regional provider of advanced cellular and transplant therapies in Central Massachusetts and beyond. It offers patients access to autologous and allogeneic donor stem cell transplants and a comprehensive portfolio of FDA-approved and investigational CART-cell therapies.

Stem Cell Transplants

UMass Memorial Health is the only stem cell transplant program in the region, delivering expert care since 1994 and performing more than 1,400 procedures. Procedures we perform include:

Autologous stem cell transplants

  • For Multiple Myeloma
  • For Hodgkins and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
  • For Multiple sclerosis (BEAT-MS Clinical Study)

Allogeneic stem cell transplants

  • Matched related donor (MRD)
  • Haplo matched related donor (Haplo)
  • Matched unrelated donor (MUD)
  • Mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD)

CAR T-Cell Therapy
UMass Memorial also offers state-of-the-art CAR T-cell therapy that involves taking T-cells (a type of white blood cell) from a patient’s blood and genetically modifying them to induce special receptors called chimeric antigen receptors (CARs). When these CAR T-cells are infused back into the patient’s body, the receptors help T-cells detect and destroy cancer cells. CAR T-cell therapy provides a highly advanced immunotherapy option for several different types of cancer patients including those with refractory cancers.

  • FDA-approved CAR T-cell therapies available at UMASS include
  • Abecma – Relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (≥2 prior lines)
  • Carvykti – Relapsed/refractory Multiple myeloma (>1 line + lenalidomide refractory)
  • Breyanzi – LBCL, CLL/SLL, follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma
  • Kymriah – LBCL, follicular lymphoma, relapsed/refractory B-cell ALL
  • Tecartus – Mantle cell lymphoma, B-cell precursor ALL
  • Yescarta – LBCL, follicular lymphoma

Our cellular therapy clinical trials explore the use of autologous stem cell transplants and CAR T-cells beyond cancer to autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, lupus nephritis, systemic sclerosis, and other diseases.

The Cellular Therapy Program at UMass Memorial Health allows patients to receive the most advanced therapy while maintaining continuity with their primary oncology teams through streamlined referrals, shared care models, and expert toxicity management.
